The City of Aurora was incorporated back in the 1880s as the town of Fletcher, receiving its name from businessman named Donald Fletcher. Fletcher saw the town as a real estate investment opportunity, however the town struggled badly after the Silver Crash of 1893. Shortly after Fletcher left the town, leaving the community with a huge water debt. It wasn’t until 1907 that the town was renamed as the town of Aurora after one of the original subdivisions of the town.
Aurora is now the state’s third largest city with a population of over 325,000, and a land area of 154 square miles. The city has had its fair share of fantastic events and honors throughout its history. In 1993, Aurora was the location for the papal mass with Pope John Paul II.
